Social Networking Site: Its Advantages and Disadvantages

With the advent of internet and mobile computation (2G, 3G, and 4G) social media has progressed a lot. It has changed the outlook of how society communicates with each other. It has created the world a smaller place to live in.

Social networking includes the social network among people of similar interests, activities, workplace or real life connections. Earlier the social networks used to get added in social gatherings like parties, meetings etc but nowadays social networks proliferate due to the emerging trends of social networking sites. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Instagram, Likedin, Skype, being the most commonly and widely used ones. Man is a social animal having the inherent desire to connect and expand connections. Despite all the geographical distances people stay in touch with each other. Today these networking sites have become the inseparable part of our life.

The growth of social networking sites is beneficial to the society as these sites have many positive aspects. The most crucial being a person getting updated of all the happenings around the world. There are several pages, groups dedicated to debates and discussions where people from different parts of the world, society and religion come across the common platform, share ideas, beliefs and inferences. This helps in developing the thought process of an individual as he comes across both sides of a subject or an issue. It is the platform where an individual can be vocal about his thoughts and share it worldwide. And not only this there are pages and groups relating to almost everything-one can go for jokes, look for job updates, GK questions and what not.

Here, people get connected to their old friends from schools, colleges and also meet new people having same interests and ideas and become friends with them.

Social media has become so popular that 'spreading a word' is easier and has become the fastest mode of communication. Thus all the influential personalities whether it being political, bollywood, socialists make their pages and spread messages to the whole nation.

Other advantage is push to the advertisement industry where companies can showcase their products on social media which has also helped creating job opportunities.

As we all know anything in excess is always bad. These Social Networking websites have many adverse effects too. People tend to spend lot of quality time on these websites peeping into other's pictures, statuses and then liking and commenting on them.

Social media has also created social isolation among individuals as instead of face to face interaction they have started preferring communicating through these websites. Instead of making phone calls, people wish their friends and relatives on Facebook on their respective birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. The real essence of relationship is missing these days.

No doubt these websites have helped bringing us closer to friends we have lost contact with but minute to minute update on whereabouts is really not imperative.

The major drawback is the impact on youth. The teenagers who are at crucial stage of their life get addicted to these sites and waste a lot of time which they should devote to their studies and building innovative ideas which results in low grades. Why only youth, anyone addictive to these websites have become less productive.

With the astounding growth worldwide one more important issue rising is the increase in cyber crime. The hackers hacks ids of people, posts inappropriate stuff, misuses the photographs, create fake s and misguide people and do Identity theft. To investigate these issues there is a cyber crime department created in police department.

In the end I would like to conclude, making social media a boon or bane is in one's own hands. Using social media is not bad but one should take care of one's privacy level by pondering all the goods and bads of these sites.

  • No, it's not good.

Kids and teenagers growing up, have no sense of manners in a public forum. They are also becoming more socially awkward as they hardly interact with people face-to-face. Instead they just text or message someone. This is only going to lead to flaws in the future as we become an un-sociable society.

  • Adverse impact of SNS

It takes you away from those right beside you. Teenagers are constantly on their phones even in the presence of elders and guests. Students are constantly checking, updating and communicating through the SNS even during lectures. Even work gets affected as employees have a tendency to check these sites regularly. Usage of these site questions your privacy and even the social movements that have been started over the net are making people less active practically on the roads. Children are going away from their parents and prefer to share their problems and emotions with their friends over SNS rather than with their parents leading to loss of Indian heritage and culture. It also has an adverse impact on the language of the teenagers, resulting in spelling errors, slang usage and poor grammar. Prolonged use can have severe health implications as it may lead to eye problems, back and neck problems and unhealthy behavior in teens like drinking, smoking, abuse, poor sleep patterns, suicide and poor academic performances. It could also lead to an increased aggression amongst the users thus making them less sympathetic towards others' feelings in the non-virtual world thus hampering their interpersonal relationships in real world.
Who is to be blamed for all this? Food for thought for you.....

  • The security issues – physical as well as those related to computers are increasing as the teenagers do not understand the effective usage of social networking. Raza Lilani

Personal lives are getting affected as they have started sharing their personal things on these sites.
    - On these sites people make friends and spend long hours chatting with them whom they have never seen or met.
    - Young generations are becoming more and more addicted to these sites.
    - Somewhere the real social life of people is getting affected very badly as find it more comfortable and find time to chat with a stranger than finding time to meet friends or relatives.
    - Recently there was a case of a social networking site where a girl attempted suicide after reading a message of her boyfriend. These types are increasing day by day.

  • Social Networking Not All Good

No, social networking is not a boon to society. Teenagers are so busy texting and chatting online anymore that they do not have time for homework and their grades reflect this. In spite of laws making it illegal, many drivers still text as they drive, they just try not to get caught at it. Social networking has replaced real-life activities and family time for many people, most of them teenagers. While these people spend countless hours texting and chatting online, they fail to realize that life is passing them by.

  • Social media is a bane

Social media might make you not feel the urge to meet whom you are texting to.In my friends family the mother and sister text while in the house.Did you know that many divorces have happened in facebook .I have put my point across and hope you know why social media is a bane

  • A big issue of social media

Another way social media can act as a curse is through its changing the behavior of our society. Some say social media sites can lend to shorter attentions and less efficient work. Not only that, but my generation, that is, teenagers, tends to abuse social media and use it for popularity. Despite social media being a term with the connotation of connecting us, that seems to be one thing it is doing least. People who abuse Facebook, for example, by requesting and accepting as many ‘friends’ as possible, up to thousands, are giving those relationships artificial traits. Those relationships are so scattered and insignificant that many people don’t even know some of their ‘friends.’ These thinning relationships have no such value, and are illusions of genuine relationships. In this abuse of social media, values of building relationships and making new connections, as were the intentions of social media, are taken away and transformed wrongfully. Nevertheless, many people do use social media for positive purposes, which leads me to the side of social media that is a complete blessing to this modern world.

  • Live in virtual world

People have started living in a virtual world glued to their small screen fantasizing about life forgetting the real world outside () Gone are the days, when evenings were time to play, meet friends and socialize, now it is time for a family to sit in front of TV, with each one glued to their cellphone () We should ban TVs and Social media between 8am to 8pm and lets see whether we can leave without it
